Gora Ghat : Immerse yourself in Spirituality
Hello all,
India is one of the civilizations in the world which has developed along the river banks. The name India is derived from the River Indus. We can definitely say that India is a country of rivers. And among more than 400 rivers, seven rivers are the main. The seven sacred rivers are the Ganges, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu, and Kaveri. We Indians treat the river as a mother as she nourishes all living beings. The saddest part is that the most sacred river of our country is also the most polluted river. Even in Shvetashvatara Upanishad, it is mentioned that “The World is the River of God. Flowing from him and flowing back to him.”

Water has many healing properties; the most important is that it heals our souls and soothes our minds. If you want peace and calm, find soothing water and stare…Go to the flowing water and listen…Feel the water beneath your feet or over your head. You will definitely heal from within, even if it is just a fraction of second. According to John C. Reilly “There’s something about the water – that solitary kind of peaceful feeling. You’re on Earth but not quite.” We also feel the same. And so whenever in doubt, we go to river banks.

As with the terrible heat from 7 in the morning, we decided to go for an evening ride, and my wish to see this aarti got fulfilled last Sunday evening!

According to our Hindu mythology, it is said that one can obtain the bliss of salvation through a bath in River Ganga, consuming the holy water of River Yamuna, or with mere sight of river Narmada or by barely remembering Tapti. I have read somewhere that “As wood is cut with a saw, so at the sight of the holy Narmada do a man’s sins fall flat”. This river is so respectful that it is believed that even the holy Ganga comes as a black cow to take a dip in this river to wash away her sins.

Near the Statue of Unity, a new Ghat has been built near Lord Shoolpaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Gora village. The temple is one of the purest shrines of Lord Shiva because it is a self-emerging lingam. The old temple is in Maharashtra, 5 km before the Sardar Sarovar Dam. The new temple is in Gora village, near the dam.

The new Gora ghat is a peaceful place; most importantly, it is pristine and clean. You should sit there endlessly and stare at the river. You can see the Gora Bridge and the Statue of Unity (its back). And aarti is an amalgamation of all our emotions to the river. Yes! If you are spiritual, then only you will enjoy it because it combines our conscientiousness, our devotion, and our constancy for the river.

The priests offer Dhoop, Ashtak, and Aarati to the river. The singers sing Narmadashtakam and other hymns in a soothing voice. There is a laser show in front of you in river water during and after aarti, and it will steal your hearts. Witnessing all these will fill your mind with positive vibes.

The security is strict here. The parking is nearby, but if you have senior citizens with you, you can drop them off till the ghat. One has to sit while the aarti is going on, and no one is allowed to stand except the Pandit and security personnel.

Timings: every evening between 08:00 PM and 08:30 PM, may vary in winter.
