Barshangarh Watefall : A little gem in a quiet village

By Kajal Shah Himachal Pradesh

Hello all,

As the new year has already knocked on the doors and as almost all of us have made new dreams, shared new promises to ourselves and to others, do we really need these so-called New Year’s resolutions? As the hairs are now seeing more and more shades of grey and as the neurons are now in need of continuous stimulation, both cognitive and social, I am slowly and slowly becoming a sloth. Though our minds are running miles per minute sometimes, our souls are always in need of slowness. And I think you can learn or experience slowness best in the mountains. Mountains teach us the meaning of patience, the meaning of wait. Just wait for clouds to clear, just wait for the rain to disappear, just wait for the 2 minutes wali maggi, or just wait for the snowy spree.

So to feel our hearts and our souls with that slowness and placidity, we went to Shangarh this Christmas. Whatever I write about this quaint small town in Sainj Valley won’t be able to do justice. Sainj Valley, much less known than her neighbour Tirthan Valley, is a valley in the Great Himalayan National Park. Shangah is a place where you will get lush green meadows in between the dense pine forests. It is the place where you can watch snowy peaks and serene waterfalls. If you want to experience a beautiful amalgamation of nature and culture, don’t think twice. Though slowly and steadily gaining popularity, this place is still far away from the routine hustle and bustle of busy hill stations like Manali or Kasol.

And the Barshangarh Waterfall is one of the best parts of our holiday. The surreal waterfall in the middle of the forest is what you need when you want to slow down. We started from our stay at Woodzo as we wanted to go leisurely, exploring the trail, mixing with locals and feeling each and every bit of that air, those trees and mighty mountains. You can also go by car to the parking area. Near the parking area, there are a few shops. dpont miss the opportunities to have local delicacies like Siddu and Burnash Juice here. After that, the trail is well marked, and you have to hike for 10-15 minutes, crossing three bridges and a few boulders, but it is totally worth it.

The Barshangarh Waterfall is a cascade of falls surrounded by lush green forest.  The sound of water and the feel of the mountain air mixed with water mist are enough to create the dreamy surroundings. Just sit there silently and soak yourself in that serenity. Among the sound of the waterfall and the sound of the birds, you might hear the sound of your inner self.

How to Reach from Shangarh

Different trails depend on your starting point. You can also go by car up to a certain point. After that, there is a short, moderate trail.

Type of Trail

  • From parking place- appx 500-600 meters with boulders.
  • If you are walking from your stay, then it depends on the trail. From Woodzo, it is appx 4.5 km.
  •  Short to moderate

Points to consider:

  • Watch for wet rocks and boulders.
  • Wear shoes with a good grip.
  • Please, please don’t litter.  Please keep the place clean. Leave only your shoe prints….
  • Bring your swimsuit and towel if you plan to take a dip in the waterfall’s pool, but avoid this in the monsoon as water currents might be too strong.

Best Time To Visit Barshangarh Waterfall

Best Season: The best season to visit is in the summer, from March to June, as you can take a dip in the water. Post monsoon months are also equally good.

Best time of the day: The best time to visit is in the morning hours to avoid crowds or the late afternoon.

Thank you..

More of this surreal valley is coming soon…. Don’t forget to like, share, and comment….
