Northern Lights : Witnessing the Goddess of Dawn
Hello all,
Northern Lights also known as Aurora, and as per Greek mythology, the Goddess of Dawn, is said to bring light, brightness, colors, and youthfulness from the heaven to the Earth.
They are magical,
They are mysterious
They are meditative

Northern Lights.. whenever I saw their pictures or videos on social media (and trust me, I got them in a lot due to social media algorithms), I thought, will I be lucky to see them in this life? Then, I read an article about the peak of the solar cycle in these two years: 2024-2025. We had already made plans for the Himalayan trek in March, but we can do that trek some other time. Right?

Seeing northern lights dancing in front of you is like a dream come true. You are witnessing one of the most spectacular phenomena of nature. They are so stunningly beautiful and mysterious at the same time that all thriller and mystery books and movies of the planet on one side also couldn’t do justice to them.

We witnessed these thrilling lights for four nights on our eight nights trip. You might think that if only you see them once, it’s enough. Trust me, it’s not. Seeing these beauties creating different hues of green, purple, pink, and red is so meditative that you might forget yourself in those moments. Surrounding cold with extreme weather (once it was -21 degrees with wind of 10 km/hr) might not affect you. Those cold, numb fingers and those moist corners of your eyes are in some other world, and you are in some different world, trying to connect with the mighty universe. Am I making sense? I don’t know. But surely, they ignite something within you. All those pictures and videos you might have seen previously now make sense. They indeed look better and brighter with camera, but when they are strong, and you see them with the naked eye, then you are one of the fortunate people on the planet Earth.

For the first two nights, we stayed in igloos in Holiday Village, Inari, which has glass igloos located just at Lake Inari. We were unlucky on the first night, as it was cloudy for the entire night.
On the second night, we saw marvelous shades of green, like ribbons and pillars. We were thrilled. My hands were shivering with excitement, even after hours of watching them. We wanted to see them as much as we could, but it was a small show. It was as if the lights were preparing us for the miracle the next day.

Then, on the 3rd night, the weather was good. We were staying in Artic River Resort, Ivalo, again located on the bank of the Ivalo River with relatively less light pollution. The resort owner told us about the possible location. We walked almost 1km, and we found a small frozen lake. And then they started appearing. It was relatively early, around 9:30 pm. Once we couldn’t see more, we came back to the resort. But we were not satisfied. After a cup of warm coffee, we were determined to go again to the lake. But destiny has a better plan for us. Striking hues of green started appearing in the sky. Initially, there were like flickers of flame, creating hues of green in the sky… gentle ribbons were evolving from the sky, and then suddenly, the entire sky was on fire; dancing ribbons were appearing from the right and then from the left, from the above and the horizon. The spectacular dance show was just for us mortal beings. Our cottage was giving the stunning foreground in this show; we just sat there on the bench, speechless and powerless! Initially, we wanted to capture every single second of it for friends and families…but then none of those things mattered. Just us and the sky above….

The 4th, 5th, and 6th nights were cloudy with snowfall, and the weather was not at all aurora-friendly.
On the 7th night, we decided to take a tour of the Northern lights from Rovaniemi, as it is very less likely to see lights from Rovaniemi as such. Pappa and the kids skipped it. We started at around 6:00 pm from Rovaniemi as we might have to go 200-300 km north to witness the magic in the sky, and we did! We indeed saw a fantastic show…We also went to Frozen Lake, and we witnessed some spectacular lights on the highway while coming back as if nature was trying to show us her real magic. The universe is telling us who the real boss is and who the original creator is. The shades of green with pink and purple hues on the edges, lights swirling and swooshing on either side of the roads, and we just contended admiring them, watching them with bewilderment and thanking the creator for providing us with the chance to see this supernatural spellbound show. We did a tour with Auroravanlapland. Jassim is an amazing person and a true Aurora lover. He made sure we witnessed one of the best shows of the season.

Still, we were not satisfied. But we knew as it was our last night and we were staying in Rovaniemi. But I had a surprise for all of us. We had dinner at the Arctic Snow Hotel and had one more chance to see the lights. The hotel was fantabulous, but I will write about that later. While we were having dinner, the server came and told us that there were terrific lights in the sky, so we could go outside and see them… when we went out, It was like the sky was a giant canvas of the universe, and the sky exploded with colors. There were riots of colors, just with the naked eye, with red, pink, purple, and green from top to bottom…they were intense and mesmerizing. Kids were flabbergasted because they were able to see such captivating lights on the last night!

So, it was a fruitful journey, as we had planned these holidays just for this astonishing Goddess, and the shimmery curtains of lights surely have a powerful impact on our hearts. We are still dreaming about her. We are still checking a live webcam of Holiday Village Inari (including Shaurya). When we close our eyes, we can see her dance. Even today if we see a clear sky, full of stars, Satva asks me, “Mamma, wouldn’t it be amazing if we were in Finland right now?”
Thank you.
