Photo Essay of Turkistan : Where History Meets Modern Contemporary

Hello all,
This is a tinier version of Uzbekistan and one of the important landmarks in the history of Kazakhstan. It was the spiritual capital of Kazakhstan in 14th century, mainly during the Timurid Empire.
Archaeological Site of Otrar
On the way to Turkistan from Shymkent, we visited the archaeological site of Otrar. These are the ruins of Otrar, and it was one of the largest cities in Central Asia on the route of the Great Silk Road. It was the city that fought with the army of Genghis Khan . The great conqueror of Central Asia, Amir Timur, lived and died here.
Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi
This is one of the most important and iconic monuments of Turkistan. The mausoleum is dedicated to the Sufi poet and philosopher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. The region became the centre of philosophy and spirituality under his guidance, and it is reflected in this grand and stunning marvel of architecture, which is adorned with a mosaic of blue tiles with intricate, exquisite, and delicate patterns, with beautiful domes. It has one of the largest domes of Central Asia, which is appx 18 meters. The history here is immortalised in the form of this gem of architecture.
Mausoleum of Rabia Sultan Begum
It is located next to the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and is equally impressive.
Underground Mosque
This is a simple, small yet spiritual place for prayer. At present, there is a small exhibit of the artefacts.
The Hammam
This was one of the important places for social gatherings.
Karavan Saray
This is the place where modern architecture merges intricately with the old heritage. This complex has shopping malls, a theatre and restaurants. The highlight is the theatre in the shape of a golden egg.
How to reach Turkistan?
The best way is to reach Shymkent, which has a flight connection from Almaty, and from there you can go to Turkistan via Taxi or Bus.
