Travelling with kids: Essential Medicines

By Kaajal Shah

Hello all,

We all love to travel. We all dream of visiting each and every nook and corner of the planet Earth. But it is not possible in our mundane world. Still, we travel far or near whenever possible, but we have a fear every time. Fear that will it be a safe trip? And when we come back home safe and sound, the first thing we do is utter a sigh of relief.

Nobody wants a sick child during travel. But trust me, it is not always possible. When we went on the Delhi-Agra trip, Shaurya came down with a severe fever and throat infection. After a year in Bali, he had diarrhea for two days…

Now we don’t want to look for medical stores on our trip. So we have made a list, and every time we check all those medicines no matter what.

 – Here is the list of medicines and other essentials items:

1) Anti pyretic for fever:

Now you can miss this one. Paracetamol tablets or syrup is a must-have in your bag.

2) Analgesics (pain killers):

We usually give paracetamol only to kids, but for us, we take Aceclofenac and Brufen.

3) For vomiting:

Tablet  Domstal and Emeset.

4) For stomach pain:

Tablet  cyclopam

5) For cough and cold:

Tablet or syrup Wikoryl.

6) For diarrhoea:

Enterogermina oral suspension

Riboflora sachets

7) For motion sickness :

Tablet Avomine

8) Antihistamine: For allergy or insect bite

Tablet Cetirizine

9) For acidity : (mainly for us)

–  Syrup Reflux

–  Rabeprazole capsules

10)Any one group of antibiotic for Thorat and stomach infection (if you are going on a remote trek for more days)

11) Eno sachets

12) Anyone antibiotic  eye drops

13) Ear drops for swimmers’ ears if going on a beach vacation

14) Vicks vapor rub – mainly in the mountains to apply on their soles at night.

15) Odomos for mosquitos

16) Aloe vera gel – for sunburns, we also need that on Himalayan treks.

17)  Digital Thermometer

18)  Any  antibiotic ointment

19) Savlon / Dettol

20) Voilini / Moov gel

21) Quick heal spray

22)Cotton, bandage, micropore tap, and band aid

23) Crepe bandage if you are going on a trek.

24) If going on a High altitude trek – Diamox and Dexamethasone (please get a prescription for this from your doctor, understand about dosage and how to use the medicines in case of emergency). And if you feel need of these medicines then contact nearby hospital or doctor.

  • How do we pack our medicines?

– Few emergency medicines like for fever, pain, vomiting, we keep in the cabin baggage in first aid kit which will be always transparent.

– When we are going for a trek all our medicines are in a pouch which is on the top of the back pack.

-We always keep first aid kit with us even if we are going on a small trek, which include Savlon, cotton and bandage.

-I had fracture on our Narmada Parikrama, from that day we now pack one crepe bandage also with us.

  • If you are travelling with parents or elderly person?

-Take few extra dosage of their regular medicines.

-Keep medicines in two different luggages, one in their hand bag and one in your luggage.

-Always carry their prescription.

-Don’t remove tags of any medicines. Keep them in their original pack.

Please talk with your paediatrician before going on any trip. Keep his/her prescription with you. So, it is always easy to follow the list and be prepared for any emergency. Don’t let your fear of illness or emergency stop you from some of the exciting trips and adventures.
