An evening in Old Phuket Town : An Unforgettable experience…

Hello all,
I thought that I should take a break from the Thailand series and write something about the places for which this blog is more known for! Our local sites, our nearby places… So we woke up at 5. We were all ready to see sunrise at the bank of our dear Mahi River at Jesapura. But the place was not at all what we thought of. We were thinking of a sunrise more like Gajana with a riverbank like Rasulpur. We missed sunrise, and the road was very confusing. So our exploration turns into just a few kilometers of walking, a long drive for Bhajiya and Samosa, and some off-road driving. And that’s how I am back with the Thailand series.
I have read somewhere the past has a soul. Municipality and the People of Phuket have taken this into literal consideration, and they have created a stunningly beautiful place where once there was a town in a ramshackle state. Yes, I am talking about the old Phuket town. It was on our list since the beginning, but we were not able to include it somehow in our itinerary. Shaurya’s friend went to Thailand last year, and he specifically mentioned to Shaurya to visit Old Phuket Town at night. And that’s how we happened to be there, after canceling our Tiger cave temple trip in Krabi. And how wonderful advice of preteen can be!! Thanks, Ayushman, if you are reading this, thanks a ton, dear…
So old Phuket town is basically amalgamation of few streets and you can pretty easily go by foot. In fact, it is the best way to visit this mesmerising place.
As I have mentioned in our blog of Rishikesh to get the best feeling of the town and its culture, we have to walk and roam in that town. And it is true here as well.
As such it is a large area. You can also stay here because there are many hostels and some good hotels. Or You can spend one day or an evening there leisurely meandering in those narrow street, doing window shopping or haggling with friendly shopkeepers, exploring awesome cafés!
Things to do at Old Phuket Town:
I feel like we truly stumbled into an underrated gem of Thailand.
Walking is the best way to move around:
Just comb through the streets without any aim. Colorful buildings of the Sino-Portugese style are visual treats! This is because many Portuguese came to settle down in Phuket, and they even brought Chinese workers for tin mining as well as to build their houses and buildings. Some Hokkien Chinese migrants married to Siamese women. This community is known as Baba, and they have a unique culture, food, and dress. So you can see a beautiful mixture of Sino-Portuguese culture here mainly in the style of buildings. Most of the buildings are now restored as hostels, cafés, shop houses, and museums.
There are a few main streets in Old Phuket Town, which are: Thalang, Phang Nga, Krabi, Dibuk, and Yoawarat. We were roaming mainly in Dibuk, Soi Romanee, and Thalang streets. Soi Romanee was the red light and gambling street of the old town but now it is one of the most Instagram-able streets of the old town because of beautiful shophouses and cafés.
Amazing murals and wall art:
Many vibrant murals and graffiti ornate the walls of the old Phuket mainly in Thalang, Soi Romanee, and Yoawarat roads.
Mural of late King Bhumibol Adulyadej
Eat local Thai Food:
We had our best Thai food on the last day of our Thailand trip., here in old Phuket town in a place called – Meeting Point
Many local restaurants are serving delicious Thai and Chinese food. For Indians looking for authentic Indian food, there are a few restaurants, Hello India and Amritsr. We had taken a parcel from Amritsr. They serve traditional authentic Punjabi cuisine.
Explore Cafés:
We didn’t have time to explore much but there are n number of cafés here. We happened to visit Cafe Aungku which is a beautifully decorated small cafe. Most of the cafés and restaurants have free Wi-Fi so you can sit there for hours together and work from there!
Shopping and more shopping:
How can a small-town vibe be complete without shopping? There are many shops by local artisans. Shops of batik clothing, shops of ceramics, shops of handmade bags and jewelry, and shops of books! You can get some costly designer clothing to street style on a bargain, it’s your choice and your pocket!
Street vibe at night:
There was no loud music or party scene, instead, there were a few live bands on every street and a few live bars. The music was soothing to the ears and this warm jamming resonated with the boho vibe of the town…
If you can adjust, go on Sunday evening on Thalang Road. Because Sunday Walking Street Market will be an unforgettable experience.
So, that was a fun and memorable evening we spent at the Old Phuket Town. I wish we had more time to roam around and explore!
Have you been to Old Phuket town? share your memories and experiences too!
